All day I hear people complimenting each other saying things like, "you look so cute today!" "your outfit looks adorable." and 'you look beautiful."
I am here to tell all of you that you don't look beautiful, just the same as you don't look smart, helpful, kind, caring and all of the other things that you are. It is time to stop saying that we look beautiful, pretty, gorgeous, etc. It is damaging to ourselves and others. It instills the idea that we can only achieve beauty for a small moment while we have nice clothes and makeup on. It makes the idea of beauty fleeting.
When you state something like you look 'sick', 'tired' or 'cold', you are referring to things that do not define you as a person, so why are we saying "you look beautiful" when beauty has everything to do with how you present yourself in your life. While beauty is something you contain in your appearance and your dress, it is also something you contain in your language and your spirit. Beauty is not something that just happens to you.
We need to remember that beauty is not something you just happen to have one day and not the next. While some days are uglier than others there is certainly some beauty to be found even in our most horrendous moments. As human beings we have to believe that we don't look beautiful, instead we know that we are beautiful.
Our beauty is held within us and can only be lost if we ourselves push it away by bullying, gossiping, and acting truly ugly till very little beauty can remain. Little by little we lose chunks of our inner beauty but continue to disguise ourselves with makeup and nice clothes. When inner beauty is gone then you might look beautiful but you can no longer be beautiful. Knowing this we must strive to perfect our inner beauty instead of neglecting it while putting on a mask to give the appearance of beauty.
We can not forget to be kind and caring so as to apply makeup to our inner beauty. Makeup on the outside wears away if it isn't maintained, therefore it does just the same on the inside. You must "touch up" your inner makeup throughout the day. I like to remind myself with a little saying that goes like this, "a compliment a day keeps the hate away." If we can remember to reapply our makeup daily our inner beauty will shine through.
Outward appearance fades but beauty is eternal. So the next time you are trying to make yourself beautiful by finding the right dress and the perfect contour technique, remember that you don't just look beautiful, you are beautiful and the only person who can take that away from you is yourself.
